On November 7 an interfaith statement signed by 28 leaders of the world’s major religions was delivered to the President of COP28, which begins in Dubai on November 30.

The statement appeals to the delegates to take “transformative action” and “to adopt a rapid, just transition away from fossil fuels”.

It also contains 18 commitments that the signatories commit to carryout, which include a duty to, “champion the development of a faith-based ecological narrative” and “lead the pursuit…of sustainable lower carbon lifestyles”.

The statement was signed by the President of the World Council of Churches (WCC), a worldwide Christian organization of which the United Church of Canada is a member.
