The story of Crescent United Church begins long before the congregation itself was established.
In the early twentieth century, local residents gathered for worship in community spaces throughout the Crescent area, including Camp Alexandra and Crescent School. As the growing community sought a permanent place for worship and fellowship, local leaders came together to establish a congregation and build a church.
Thanks to the vision and generosity of pioneer settler Captain Watkin Williams and many dedicated volunteers, Crescent Union Church was completed and dedicated in June 1922, free of debt. What began as a small gathering of neighbours soon became an enduring presence in the life of the community.
From its earliest days, Crescent was shaped by a spirit of collaboration.
Before the formation of The United Church of Canada in 1925, Anglican and Presbyterian members worshipped together, shared leadership responsibilities, and worked side by side in Sunday School and congregational life. This cooperative spirit helped create a welcoming and inclusive congregation that valued relationships above differences.
One lasting symbol of Crescent's heritage is the historic Lych Gate that still stands on the church property. Built in the 1930s as a memorial to Captain Watkin Williams, it remains a unique landmark and a reminder of the congregation's deep roots in the community.
As South Surrey grew, so did Crescent United Church.
The congregation expanded its ministries, welcomed new families, and continually adapted its facilities to meet changing needs. New buildings, renovations, and community spaces reflected a commitment to creating a church that could serve both present and future generations.
By the 1950s, Crescent had become an independent congregation with its own minister and growing ministries. Through the following decades, the church developed programs for children, youth, families, and older adults, becoming an important gathering place for worship, learning, service, and friendship.
Throughout its history, Crescent United Church sought to live out its faith through service to others.
Members supported local outreach initiatives, welcomed newcomers, cared for those experiencing loss or isolation, and participated in global mission efforts. The congregation was actively involved in refugee sponsorship, pastoral care, and community support programs that reflected the United Church's commitment to compassion and justice.
The church also fostered spiritual growth through retreats, educational opportunities, lay leadership, and partnerships with theological students preparing for ministry.
Children and families have always played an important role in the life of Crescent United Church.
From Sunday School programs and family-focused worship services to preschool partnerships and youth ministry initiatives, the congregation worked to create a welcoming environment where people of all ages could grow in faith and community.
Generations of families found friendship, support, and belonging within the congregation's walls.
For nearly a century, Crescent United Church served as a spiritual home for countless individuals and families throughout South Surrey and the Semiahmoo Peninsula.
In 2017, Crescent United Church joined with Sunnyside United Church and First United Church to form Peninsula United Church. While the organizational structure changed, the values that guided Crescent for generations continue today.
Its legacy lives on through Peninsula United Church's commitment to worship, community, learning, outreach, and compassionate service.
The story of Crescent United Church is one of faithful people building community, supporting one another, and sharing God's love in practical ways. That legacy continues to shape Peninsula United Church and its ministry today.
