Three Congregations. One Shared Mission.

Peninsula United Church was formed in 2017 through the coming together of three historic congregations: First United Church in White Rock, Crescent United Church, and Sunnyside United Church in South Surrey.

While each congregation had its own unique story, all three shared a common purpose: to create welcoming communities of faith, care for neighbours in need, and help people connect with God and one another.

Together, they represent more than a century of worship, service, learning, and community leadership on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. Today, that legacy continues through Peninsula United Church.

Deep Roots in the Semiahmoo Peninsula

The story begins in the early 1900s, when the communities of White Rock, Crescent, and South Surrey were still developing.

As families settled throughout the peninsula, local residents gathered in homes, schools, community halls, and temporary meeting spaces for worship and fellowship. These early gatherings reflected a deep desire for community, spiritual connection, and mutual support.

Over time, those small groups grew into thriving congregations that became important parts of community life.

First United Church (White Rock)

Established in 1910, First United Church grew alongside the young community of White Rock. From its earliest days, it served as both a spiritual home and a gathering place for residents, supporting worship, outreach, music, education, and community service.

The congregation became known for its commitment to social justice, compassionate outreach, and community leadership, helping shape the character of White Rock for more than a century.

Crescent United Church

Founded in 1922, Crescent United Church developed strong roots in the Crescent Beach and South Surrey communities.

Built through the vision, generosity, and volunteer efforts of local residents, the congregation became known for its welcoming spirit, family-focused ministries, and dedication to nurturing faith across generations.

Through worship, education, pastoral care, and outreach, Crescent United Church fostered a strong sense of belonging and community connection.

Sunnyside United Church

Beginning in 1949, Sunnyside United Church emerged during a period of significant growth in South Surrey.

As the surrounding community evolved from rural farmland into a rapidly growing urban centre, the congregation continually adapted to meet changing needs. Known for its hospitality, community partnerships, and commitment to service, Sunnyside United Church became an important gathering place for generations of residents.

Its story reflects a congregation that embraced change while remaining grounded in faith, compassion, and community.

Coming Together

By the early twenty-first century, the three congregations recognized that they shared more than geography. They shared values, vision, and a desire to strengthen ministry for future generations.

Through years of conversation, discernment, and collaboration, members explored new ways of working together while honouring the unique histories of each congregation.

In 2017, First United Church, Crescent United Church, and Sunnyside United Church formally united to become Peninsula United Church.

The decision reflected a belief that by combining their strengths, resources, and gifts, they could continue serving the community in meaningful and sustainable ways for years to come.

Our Legacy Today

The legacy of these three congregations continues to shape who we are today.

From First United, we inherit a commitment to community leadership, justice, and compassionate service.

From Crescent United, we inherit a deep appreciation for belonging, faith formation, and caring relationships.

From Sunnyside United, we inherit a spirit of adaptability, hospitality, and community engagement.

Together, these legacies help guide Peninsula United Church as we seek to live out our mission through Faith, Engagement, and Service.

Looking Forward

Our history is more than a collection of dates, buildings, and milestones. It is the story of thousands of people who have gathered for worship, celebrated life's joys, supported one another through challenges, and worked together to make a positive difference in their community.

Today, Peninsula United Church continues that story.

As an affirming congregation of The United Church of Canada, we welcome people of all ages, backgrounds, identities, and life experiences. We remain committed to creating meaningful connections, serving our neighbours, and growing together in faith.

The story that began more than a century ago continues today, and we invite you to be part of it.
