Our Partnership with Tierra Nueva, El Salvador

Peninsula United Church is proud to walk in solidarity with the community of Tierra Nueva, El Salvador, through a long-standing partnership rooted in faith, friendship, and justice.

In collaboration with FUNDAHMER (the Foundation for Human Development of El Salvador), we support grassroots projects that meet real needs and build resilience in this rural community.

Clean Water for a Stronger Future

In late 2023, our congregation raised funds for rainwater storage tanks, and their arrival in Tierra Nueva was a moment of great celebration. Delivered by two flatbed trucks navigating rugged dirt roads, these 2,500-litre tanks are now providing safe, reliable water access to families who need it most.

Families who received tanks in this phase include Ana Luz, Margarito Abel, Marvin, Blanca, Ana, Jackeline, Leticia, Karen, Maria, Alba Luz, Julio, Angie, and Yeni. The total cost—including filters to ensure the water is safe to drink—was $7,575 CAD.

Access to clean water changes everything. It supports health, dignity, and daily life—especially in remote areas where water is scarce or difficult to transport.

Health and Hope

Through our community health project, we help stock two local medicine cabinets with basic medications and first aid supplies. Trained community members provide essential care to their neighbours—filling critical gaps in access to health services.

We remain in weekly contact with our partners at FUNDAHMER, exchanging updates, photos, and prayers to sustain this relationship, even seven years after our last in-person visit.

Reconnecting in 2025

We are currently in the early stages of planning a return visit to El Salvador. The trip will include:

  • A visit to Tierra Nueva to reconnect with families and share meals (yes, pancakes are on the menu!)

  • Time spent at historical, cultural, and spiritual sites that are meaningful to the Salvadoran people

  • Opportunities to deepen our understanding of the region’s history and ongoing work for justice and peace

Standing with Our Global Neighbours

While the first crop of the year was successful, unseasonable heavy rains later damaged vital sorghum and bean crops. The need remains great—but so does the community’s courage and spirit.

We are deeply grateful to our congregation for its faithful and generous support. You are making a lasting difference in the lives of our sisters and brothers in Tierra Nueva—and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
